The Maritime Predictive Compliance Dashboard

PSC RiskIQ is a real-time risk assessment tool that uses data-driven insights to help maritime operators predict and prepare for Port State Control inspections, which are mandatory inspections carried out by authorities to ensure ships comply with international regulations. I led the end-to-end design efforts which includes research, interviews, testing, design iterations and working with engineering team to transform a complex data model into a human-centered product for global maritime users.

The Problem

Port detentions are costly and damaging. Maritime operators needed a way to proactively prepare for inspections and reduce risk—but existing tools were fragmented, hard to interpret, and reactive.

Discovery & Insights

We interviewed users across ship management, operations, and technical compliance.

Pain Points Identified:

  • Fragmented data across platforms

  • No early warning before PSC inspections

  • Poor clarity on why a vessel was flagged

  • Static, spreadsheet-like tools caused friction

Design Approach


1. Data Interpretation

I collaborated with Development & Data Team to understand the risk algorithm and translated output into color-coded scores and trends.

2. Test early ideas and validation

  • Discussions with subject-matter experts on challenges

  • Created wireframes for:

    • Risk overview by fleet/vessel

    • Drill-down into individual vessels

    • Risk history & factors (e.g., previous inspections, deficiencies)

  • Conducted user validations of the low-fidelity designs

  • Discussions with engineering on the feasibility of early designs

3. UX Structure & Interaction Design

Built low-fidelity mockups:

  • Filterable dashboards

  • Hover tooltips for scores

  • Explanation modals for transparency

4. Implementation and testing

  • Worked with developers to identify technical

  • Collaborating with Data and Engineering teams to align visual and algorithmic output.
